Lecture – The Opioid Epidemic and Dentistry: Where does Dentistry fit in?

The Opioid Epidemic has gripped America with a strength and fervor resembling the HIV/AIDS crisis of the previous century. In 2018 over 130 Americans die every day from overdose deaths linked to opioids. The multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry played a key role in creating this epidemic by putting profits over people as they promoted highly addictive opioids such as OxyContin.

What is the role of the dental profession in the Opioid Epidemic? As dentist we must recognize we are among the top three prescribers of opioids and often the first health care professional to prescribe an opioid to a teen or young adult.

The opioid epidemic is changing how we practice dentistry by increasing awareness in the dental profession of the use, abuse, and diversion of addictive opioids. As dentist we must embrace this increased awareness and do our part in decelerating the epidemic

Dr. Whitesides will address the following concepts in this lecture:

  1. The etiology of the Opioid Epidemic
  2. The evolution of OxyContin and its role in the Opioid Epidemic
  3. The use and potential abuse of Opioids in Dentistry
  4. The position of the ADA and AAOMS on Opioid prescribing
  5. The common behaviors of drug seeking dental patients
  6. The key national issues in the Opioid Epidemic
  7. The development of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
  8. A Doctor’s liability in prescribing opioids
  9. The economics behind the opioid epidemic
  10. Advanced pain management strategies
